Mindfulness of Mouth Meditation

Out of the thousands of meditations out there, I haven’t seen this exact variation. Certainly, I’m not the only person who’s thought of this, but since it isn’t everywhere…

Anyone who has been meditating regularly for a month or so knows how wonderful meditation is, but getting into meditation is not easy. Just sitting there not doing anything doesn’t look like a thrill ride, so here’s something to get you started. I call it Mindfulness of Mouth.

Get a small desert, or some of your favorite food. Go for taste. Forget health food for a minute. You’re already starting a mindfulness practice, so really, get over yourself and eat something delicious.

Eat it, one bite at a time, literally. Take each bite like it’s the last one. Not just the last bite of this dish, but the last bite you will ever have. Notice as much as you can about the smell, taste, and texture. Roll it around in your mouth and suck every bit out of your teeth. Enjoy the aftertaste. Don’t do anything with that fork or spoon until you’ve completely finished with the bite in your mouth. Close your eyes if you like. Just eat that piece like it’s the only one you’ll ever have. Then, when you are done, have another.

After you’ve finished greedily licking the bowl or wrapper, pat yourself on the back. You’re on your way to enlightenment, like a fat buddha boss! Of course, there are other pleasant ways to get into meditation. Play your favorite song on repeat. Stare at something beautiful. Whatever you do, make it enjoyable. You deserve it.
